Environmental recovery of the old purification system by lagooning for the birds of Casar de Caceres
In 2015 the Hydrographic Confederation of the Tagus, within the framework of the "Contract of consulting and technical assistance services in the environmental assessment to the technical direction of the Hydrographic Confederation of the Tagus", commissioned to everis Ingeniería the technical design and environmental surveillance of the works for the environmental recovery of the lagoons of the old WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Plant) of Casar de Caceres (Caceres).
These lagoons, previously used as a water purifying medium, have been transformed into a favorable habitat for the settlement and nesting of aquatic birds and a semi-natural environment for social and cultural use.
The reconstruction of this environment supposes an important action in the matter of protection of species since it is in a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPAB), considered by the European Union as relevant spaces for the preservation of the avifauna in danger of extinction.
To achieve this, several actions have been proposed, among which are included works of conditioning and environmental integration of the lagoons and their annexed lands such as the creation of a fluvial channel, the construction of two artificial islands with the objective of favoring the colonization of avifauna species, the redefinition and execution of an artificial stream taking advantage of the natural drainage of the lagoon, and the vegetal conditioning and restoration of the surroundings of the lagoons, among others.
In addition to the work of naturalization of the lagoons, additional improvements have been made as part of the restoration of the rest of the space, such as the construction of a bird observatory or the placement of furniture; for the social and cultural use of space.
